Officer Dragged 200 Feet By Car

March 3, 2006

Garland police arrested a 25-year-old Dallas man early Tuesday who had been driving a vehicle that had dragged a police officer 200 feet.

Herman Nixon is being held at the Garland Detention Center and is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, a first degree felony, Officer Joe Harn said.

Officer Reccus Jones suffered multiple cuts, scrapes, bruises and a severe concussion and was taken to Baylor University Medical Center for treatment.

The incident occurred in Southeast Garland around 8 p.m. Monday in the 1800 block of Lombard Street when police stopped Nixon, who was driving a 1985 Oldsmobile, Harn said.

According to police, Nixon was unable to produce a driver's license and started to drive away when Officer Jones grabbed the driver and was pulled 200 feet down the street before he fell onto the roadway.

Just after midnight, Dallas police spotted the suspect's vehicle at the Aloha Motel in the 2800 block of East Illinois Avenue, and arrested Nixon.
