Bus Wreck Sends Students To Hospital

January 31, 2006

Eleven elementary school students were treated and released from the hospital Tuesday morning after their school bus was hit by a truck.

Eight students were taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The students complained of neck, muscle and stomach pains. Seventeen Elementary School students were on the bus.

The accident happened about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday as the bus was turning west from state Highway 146 to FM 1765. The bus driver turned on his emergency flashers to stop at an approaching railroad crossing.

Texas City Cpl. Chet Rich said the truck from RCS Rentals sideswiped the back bumper as it tried to pass. Rich said the truck driver was cited for unsafe lane change.

The district has a bus contract with Durham Transportation. There have been no other bus accidents this year, said district officials.
