A man is dead after running a red light in northeast Harris County. The man's truck was struck by an 18-wheeler as he crossed the intersection, according to a spokesman from the Sheriff's office.
The man, 30, driving the truck was killed instantly. Doctors at Memorial Hermann Hospital have listed the driver of the truck in serious but stable condition.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Mesa Drive and Beltway 8. The truck was headed north when he ran the red light and the westbound 18-wheeler slammed into him around 2 a.m.
The impact caused the truck to burst into flames and the force actually turned the truck onto its side.
Witnesses reported that the big-rig did in fact have the green light when the pickup ran the red light.
The driver of the truck was pulled out by an employee from a nearby gas station while it was still ablaze. That man also called 911 to report the accident.
Authorities closed the westbound lanes of the Beltway for about 8 hours following the accident.
The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
