A 5-year-old was playing with a pellet gun on Saturday afternoon when he shot and killed his 4-year-old female cousin.
The girl, Esmeralda Contreras, was taken to Children's Medical Center where doctors performed surgery on her. They did all they could but she was pronounced dead just a few hours later, according to a spokesman from the Dallas County Medical examiner.
The children were all over at their grandmother's house in the 1100 block of Whitley Drive near Lake June Road and Loop 12. They were all in the backyard when one of the children found the pellet gun behind the washing machine.
According to police, there was only one shot fired, which hit the little girl. Nobody else was injured.
The pellet gun was property of the boy's father. Police are ruling that the tragedy was an accident.
