Man Pleads Not Guilty In Crash That Killed 6 Immigrants

March 7, 2006

A man who authorities think was the guide leading a pickup truck around a border checkpoint has pleaded not guilty to charges related to a wreck that killed six illegal immigrants in the truck.

Pablo Gonzalez Lopez faces up to five years in prison on each of the four counts of reckless disregard stemming from the Jan. 26 accident involving the truck and a tractor trailer near Falfurrias.

Gonzalez, of Reynosa, Mexico, also waived his right to a deportation hearing during an appearance before a federal magistrate Tuesday, meaning he would be deported after he is released.

State police investigators believe the pickup's driver proceeded from a county road onto the highway shortly before dawn, and the pickup was broadsided by the tractor trailer. They say a stop sign was missing.

Another man, Dario Martines Caporali, also known as Santos Guajardo, was accused of driving one of the vehicles involved in the wreck, which was observed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Martines was found dead at the Nueces County Jail, and authorities believe he committed suicide.
